A Message from Tyler Perry – Stay in the Climb

To chase down a dream!

Sorry I’ve been MIA but we just finished the movie, For Colored Girls, and
I have to tell you, I have new respect for Ntozake Shange’s 1975 writings.
Listening to these words spoken through the voices of Phylicia Rashad,
Kerry Washington, Tessa Thompson, Macy Gray, Kimberly Elise, Thandie
Newton, Whoopi Goldberg, Janet Jackson and Loretta Devine, made me not
only respect the brilliance of the material, but also pull out everything
in me to do my best to give it the care and attention to detail that it
deserved. Out of all that I’ve ever done in my life, nothing has taken
more out of me than this film. It is remarkable.

Being so drained, I decided to take a few days off. Yesterday I was
hiking a mountain in Hawaii with a friend. I was laboring up this
beautiful green pastured mountain, looking down at my feet trying to be
sure of my footing, while at the same time trying to catch my breath from
the altitude. At times, I would make big steps, sometimes all I could do
was take small ones. The terrain was uneven and rough at times. It took
a lot of effort and a lot of thought so, needless to say, I was getting
really tired and at times wanted to stop or just turn back.

I got to one peak and I thought “I’m here, great, we can rest now” only to
realize that just because I was at the top of one peak, that didn’t mean I
had arrived. There were more…more valleys to go through and more heights
to reach. It was interesting to me, that in order to go higher, we
usually had to go down through a valley, and it went on and on and up and
up. I was tired and wanted to sit down but my friend said, “Come on,
let’s go a little higher.” So, not to be outdone by a girl (lol), I dug
my hiking boots in and went a little higher. We finally got to one of the
highest points and she said to me, “This is the best part, now turn
around.” I turned around and behind me was the most amazing view that I
had seen in my 40 years on this earth. As far as my eyes could see,
beauty reigned. The Hawaiian Islands seemed to be leaping up out of the
silver blue sea, stretching up to catch the dust of the sky. The clouds
seemed close enough to catch in my hand and make a wish; rays of sunlight
danced through them trying to find a path to show off their own glow and
power. Not even Picasso could have out-painted the canvas that was before
me. The heavens were declaring the glory of God. I saw Him in motion.

I said to my friend, “When did we get this high?”, and she said, “It was
in the climb.” I couldn’t help but think about life – mine and maybe even
yours. I thought about how hard it had been for me chasing down my dream.
I thought about how hard it can be to believe sometimes. I thought about
the entire struggle, all of the pain, all of the hope, all of the doubt.
I thought about the times I was working a dead end job, trying to believe;
moving through day-to-day with my head down just taking one step at a
time, some small, some big ones, wanting to give up; wanting to stop and
sit for a while; wanting to lay in my sorrow; nobody believing in me;
nobody thinking it would come to pass and never realizing that every step
was taking me closer to higher. That hike was painful, it hurt, but
through it all I was getting higher and had no idea how high I was.
That’s what it’s like to chase down a dream.

Sometimes in life dreams are hard to follow, like that climb. You don’t
know how high you’re going or even if you’re moving, but every step, even
when you can’t see what’s behind you, will take you closer to your goals.
It’s in the climb. I know you may be struggling right now, but you’re in
the climb; things may be hard right now, but you’re in the climb; people
may not believe in you, but it’s part of the climb. They may take shots
at you, but stay in the climb; you may have to stand alone, but you’re in
the climb. Even if you’re not where you want to be right now, I want to
say to you what she said to me, “This is the best part, now turn around.”
Look how far you’ve come. God has not brought you this far to leave you.
Stay in the climb.

I’m sitting backstage at the Arie Crown in Chicago. I finish here on
Saturday night after 6 sold-out shows! Two on Saturday, then I leave here
at 11pm to fly to L.A. After a few hours of plane sleep..LOL…I have to
be up pretty early on Sunday for a long, fun, exciting day! And this is
why; I don’t know if you know this or not, but I’m presenting at the
Oscars! So strange, I became an Academy member last year and, this year,
I’m asked to present. How cool is that?! Catch it this Sunday night if
you can. 6 Nominations for PRECIOUS – I’m so happy for them.

I’m also thankful for the NAACP Image Awards. PRECIOUS won several
awards, as well as “House of Payne.” I received the Chairman’s Award. It
was a great moment for me. I was pretty much on the same travel schedule,
BUT it was great.

In all that I do, it is important to me to inspire and encourage, and that
is what I tried to do with my speech. Not sure if you saw it or not, but
I’m sure someone has put it on YouTube by now…LOL. I’d love for you to
see it, and if you do, I hope that my words inspire you.

I’ll try and check in next week but Monday I go right back to the show.

Hey, I didn’t want to forget to tell you this -

This Sunday night, I’m going to be on Extreme Makeover Home Edition on
ABC! This is a two-hour special episode! I love this show and I was so
excited to be a part of it! I’ve got to tell you, it felt so good being
able to meet and help some really amazing people. I met the Tripp
family…they are a couple who opened up their small home to 25 inner city
kids to keep them out of trouble, even though their house was falling
apart. I mean, they have very little and are sharing it with so many. I
was so inspired by them. I don’t want to tell you too much but the show
was really moving; and meeting Tom Lewis, a man who has devoted his life
to making sure that children in Southeast DC have an opportunity to learn
and stay out of trouble. You’ve really gotta see it! It airs this
Sunday, and I MEAN…THIS IS FEEL GOOD T.V.! It’s what I think T.V. should
be used for…I LOVE it!

A Message from Tyler Perry – Tour/Haiti/New Movie!

The tour is going great! I am so happy and blessed to be able to be in
front of the people. We sold out the Kodak in LA, we sold out Madison
Square Garden and now I finally get to the South. I am so excited about
getting down South! Don’t get me wrong, I love out West and up North, but
the South…I don’t know, I guess it’s because I’m a Southern boy at
heart… Smile

The love I have been receiving every night is so evident. Every time I
leave the stage I realize that the audience, you guys, has helped to ease
my grief a little. I just thank you so much, to all of you, who have come
through the doors so far to show me your love. Thank you. God bless you.
I so feel it. It is the truth. You have no idea what you are doing for
me. You have no idea.

I had a night to come home and look in on the dogs. Aldo was so happy to
see me. I need to send you a video of how this dog greets me. He runs in
circles when he sees me, jumps on me…it’s the best! Peter, Paul and Mary,
(I call them “The Thugs” because for a while they were tearing everything
up,…LOL…but they’re better now), are about 50 pounds each. I’m not sure
how big they will get though. They love the cold weather. I think it’s
the Husky in them. Anyway, they’re healthy and happy. My folks are
taking really good care of them while I’m away.

I wanna say Thank You to all the people who have given to my Haiti Relief
effort. Thousands of you have given almost $100,000.00 so far! I will
keep you posted as to what I will be doing with your money. I have raised
my personal donation from $250,000.00 to $1million. I did this realizing
that after the next big story comes along, the news media will pack up and
leave the people of Haiti to fend for themselves. They always do. So my
plan is to do just what I did when I built those 20 houses for the
survivors of Hurricane Katrina. Sometimes it’s best to wait for the
frenzy to pass to really be effective. Haiti needs help now and there are
a lot of people doing that, but they will also need help in the coming
months. My plan is to take a trip there and see for myself how to put our
donations to the best use. Thank you so much! Remember, there is one
thing you never get punished for, and that is giving.

My prayers are with the people of Haiti. I’m so glad that this new
leadership in our government has responded so quickly. Thank God for
change. The truth of the matter is this, “There but for the grace of God
it could be any of us” and when we help our fellow man we truly help all
of humanity, including ourselves.

If you are like me, I know you want to do something. If you are like me,
I know you want to make sure that whatever you do, it actually gets to the
people of Haiti. I was watching the news and was appalled that some
people are already starting to set up charity scams. I just don’t
understand how people can be so cruel.

I had planned to give a private donation once I vetted some of these
organizations, but then I thought about the people who may want to give
but don’t have the ability to look deeply into some of these
organizations. So, I came up with this idea. If you want to make a
donation, you can do so to the TYLER PERRY FOUNDATION and I will add it to
what I’m giving. I can assure you that every dime, 100%, of what you give
will get to an organization that will use it to help the Haitian people.

“Yele Haiti” is an organization that was started by Wyclef Jean. Over
the years, it has done some amazing things for the Haitian people. I know
that this is one organization that I will be supporting. He is in Haiti
now and from what I understand, he is strategizing on how “Yele Haiti”
will be involved in the relief efforts. I’m hoping to speak with him upon
his return. Once I know more, I will let you know. I’m also planning to
give to “Doctors Without Borders.” This is another great organization and
they are on the ground in Haiti now too.

In the meantime, let’s start raising money. I know things may be a little
tight right now, but what I have learned over the years is that you never
get punished for giving. I plan to make a few, but my first donation will
be $250,000.00. You can add whatever you like to this and I know any
amount of money that you would like to give would be appreciated greatly
by the people of Haiti. No amount is too small. I assure you that every
dime you give to the TYLER PERRY FOUNDATION for this effort will get to
the people of Haiti.

Hey there,
I’m in Fresno. I slept on the bus last night. There was a smell in the
hotel and my sinuses were killing me. Oh well, I’m ready to go tonight!
I’m on the bus jamming to Tamela Mann’s new CD, THE MASTER PLAN. Do you
have it yet? All I gotta say is…WOW! Pick it up if you can, ya’ll…get
Cora’s CD…LOL.
Just wanted to give you an update…the tour is going so well. It’s been
a week now and all I can tell you is that people who have seen it are
blown away. I mean blown away! I am really enjoying this show. I’m so
glad to be on the road in front of the people again. I didn’t know how
much I missed this and I really didn’t know how much I needed it. This is
so great! I don’t know of a better way to grieve than to write a show and
dedicate it to my mother. This is really helping me. Thank you to all
of you who have come and to those of you who are planning to come. I
promise you won’t be disappointed.
MADEA’S BIG HAPPY FAMILY is truly the biggest show I’ve ever done. I am
traveling with (70) people, (9) 18-wheelers, (8) buses, not to mention the
lights, sound, the video components and the special effects. I guess what
I want you to know is…IT’S A BIG SHOW! Just to give you some idea, on
the MADEA GOES TO JAIL tour, we had (26) people, (3) 18-wheelers, and (2)
buses…this show is twice as big. I didn’t want to come out unless I
could give you something special, and this is special. You have never
seen a play like this one. I said it once and I’ll say it again – IF
YOU’VE NEVER SEEN MADEA LIVE, then you have never seen MADEA AT ALL!
You know what else is so cool? I had no idea how large of an audience I
had outside of the African-American community. Seeing it from the stage
is pretty amazing. I always knew that truth was color-blind and that as
long as I tell the truth in my work it would reach the masses. SO great
to see that happening!
Last thing, then I’m off to the gym – I CAN DO BAD ALL BY MYSELF comes out
on DVD today. Pick it up if you can. I know it will bless you really
good. It has already blessed millions.
